Our final day on Rhodes we decided to go to Lindos which is about 60km from Rhodes town.
We took the bus which cost EUR12.50 for the three of us and took 1.5hrs. Great way to see the countryside along the way.
We went to Lindos to swim in the Agean sea and also to visit what's considered a significant port in the ancient world. Some of the current maritime law came from the naval judiciary that was developed B.C. There is a castle and acropolis on the hill overlooking the twin harbours.
Just a small comment on B.C. - it's a term that you come across every day here as we explore ancient stuff and it's not a term we come across in NZ except when reading history books. We have talked with Connor about how lots of the stuff we are seeing over here was built before NZ was even discovered. Quite amazing to think about when you take time to reflect on it.
Back to Lindos - an awesome spot with magnificent views out over the Agean sea. It is one of those spots that is picture postcard perfect. When you look out from the place you get off the bus you can see how easily the sailors of old thought the world was flat and they could fall off the end of the world if they sailed too far!
We all took the donkey up to the castle and acropolis - saved the legs a long steep walk and there was still some steep walking and steps once you get off the donkey to get to the castle and acropolis. The donkey ride was a real experience - the old guy that took C & I spoke no English except for "beep beep" which he called out to people in the way!
The views from the top were awesome although the acropolis was suffering from scaffolding-itis and much of it has actually been/ is in the process of being rebuilt. Still gives you a sense of what it would have been like.
