On our way to Bodrum we stopped at Stratonikeia which turned out to be a highlight of our trip.
We paid nothing to go in and we saw them excavating a grave from the Byzantine times.
Too many highlights to comment in detail in a blog post.
- gymnasium - it was massive and we could see the different rooms in it quite clearly
- the streets and some houses were still walkable like it was
- roman street just starting to be excavated and you could see the difference in levels between the roman street and Byzantine street - a couple of metres
- a newly excavated grave they just found the day before and one they were just doing
- a Turkish bath - you could see the raised floor where the heating system was set up
All in all a massive highlight we could have stayed all day.
